DIY Custom Sized Leather Travelers Notebook

DIY Custom Sized Leather Travelers Notebook

I am a journaler, planner, and a planner addict. No really if you only knew. Over the years I have looked for the perfect one, and have yet to find it. Then I finally got serious and wrote down the things I needed in a good planner/journal. I needed the size of a 6 ring binder planner, but the ease of swapping out a notebook like a travelers notebook. No luck and the ones I found were expensive! So I worked on this DIY Custom Sized Leather Travelers Notebook, and it turned out so well I thought I’d share.

Cut 2 17″ x 10 1/2″ pieces of the leather
Cut a piece 6 1/2″ length x 5″ wide triangle piece

Spray the inside of the large leather pieces with the adhesive. Then adhere the two pieces of leather together making sure the edge meet etc. Let dry for an hour.

Take the composite notebooks and find the center, using your scissors cut the threads so that you can separate the pages. Gather as much of the pages together as you want to create your notebook inserts. I made 2 each from one composition notebook. After separating the sections you are going to sew the center of each one. Yes, you can sew paper, it’s pretty amazing.

Lay your leather notebook flat and place the triangle pieces on the outer lower corner of the left inside. You’re going to sew the outer edge and along the bottom edge. Then continue sewing the edge of the entire notebook. This will keep your notebook from coming apart later. See the above image.

Adding Holes for the Elastic Cords

If you look at the above picture you can see a spot in the center. That’s the hole I put into my notebook for the elastic strap that holds my notebook together. You are going to do the same thing now. Fold your notebook in half and mark the center for your hole.

Now you’re going to mark the holes for the insert elastics. These go will go 1/4″ from the edge of the upper center and the bottom center. You’ll need the ruler and scrap paper for this step. Cut a 2″ width piece out of the paper, lay your ruler on the piece of paper and put a mark at the 1/2 line, the 1″ line, and the 1 1/2″ line. This is your template for marking your holes on the notebook.

Find the center of the upper edge of the notebook and go down 1/4″ from the edge, lay the 1″ mark at that point. Put a little dot there, then another one at the 1/2″ mark and at the 1 1/2″ mark. See this DIY Custom Travelers Notebook – Hole Marking Template for a visual. Do this to the top and bottom of your notebook.

Poking Holes & Adding the Elastic Cords

This part was a little tricky I used my little scissors for making my holes. The pointy tip worked out good for me. Now just go and make the holes at each of the markings you made. Cut a piece of elastic cord to approximately 36″ this will give you extra at the end, but makes it easier to work with.

Now for the tricky part, think of the holes you just punched as left to right, on the inside of the spine with #1, #2 and #3 on the top and #4, #5 and #6 on the bottom. Everything on the inside will be vertical and everything outside will be horizontal.

Start at the outside of #5 and insert one end of the elastic cord through the hole to the inside leaving a small tail-like piece inside. Take the other end of the cord and from the outside insert it into hole #6. Pull cord up to #3, go out and over to #2, in and down to #5, out and over to #4, in and up to #1, out and over to #2 in and down to the tail left at #5. Pull the cords and take up any slack, once all of the cord is tight, tie the two ends together in a knot and trim the ends with scissors.

Now for the center strap cord. Take a long enough piece of the elastic cord and divide it in half. Take the loop half of the cord and insert it into the middle hole with the loop on the outside. This will be located at the center spline of your notebook. Tie a knot to secure it into place. Pull one loop around your notebook to secure everything into place.

Adding your inserts

Adding the inserts is easy simply left one of the elastics and slip an insert under it, continue this process until you’ve added all the ones you made earlier. I made some folder inserts for mine and will be sharing how I did those a little later.

Final Thoughts

If I made another one of these I’d probably add a stabilizer in between the two pieces of leather. Maybe the next one I’ll add a pocket thing to the back of the notebook. I basically love this notebook and the part that I really enjoy is that it’s the perfect size for me. I can also store the notebook inserts in little storage boxes for reflecting later.
